By the time Alice awoke, the sun had gone down and the air had chilled. She tried to snooze a little more in Lisaâs comforting arm. Lisa must have sensed she was awake because she stirred, kissed Alice on the forehead and gently extricated herself from Aliceâs limbs.
Alice pushed herself up onto her elbow.
Lisa picked up the soft tracksuit-bottoms and long-sleeve T-shirt from where they had landed outside the bathroom and put them and a fresh dry towel on the edge of the bed.
âYou are welcome to have another warm shower and then put these on until we get you home.â
At the thought of having to go home, having to part from Lisa, Alice felt a little bereft, but she pulled herself together and went to shower.
For some reason she felt a little self-conscious now, so she closed the door to the little bathroom, rationalising that she didnât want the shower to splash into the passage outside. The warmth of the water was a boon. Her body felt so relaxed and energised at the same time â a feeling of vitality and youthfulness she had not experienced in a very long time.
She thought back to the events of the day and what had just happened. Wow! Could that have been her first orgasm? If so, she suddenly understood what all the fuss was about. Out of nowhere, an inexplicable wave of fatigue, fear and loneliness hit her. She collapsed her head against the cold wall of the shower and allowed her tears to flow, diluted by the warm water pouring over her.
Ever conscious that self-pity was not a productive emotion and the fact that the water supply on the boat was limited, she didnât allow herself to indulge very long. She pulled herself together, dried off and got dressed quickly and went to find Lisa on the flybridge.
âGreat, youâve finished. I didnât want to start the engine and set off until you were out. It can be a bit choppy on the way back.â
Alice was not sure how to be with Lisa, now. She couldnât help still feeling vulnerable and exposed. As a result, Lisaâs business-as-usual tone cut deeper than it probably should have.
But when Lisa got up, to Aliceâs surprise, rather than get straight on with the business of heading back, she came over to Alice, put her arm around her and pulled her close. She kissed her softly on her forehead. âAre you okay?â she asked.
Lisaâs warm body felt so comforting, so safe around her that Alice had to grit her teeth to stop herself from once again dissolving into a snivelling mess. Instead she nodded and hugged Lisa back.
âGood,â Lisa said. âIâm sorry we had to get up so abruptly. Itâs getting late and itâs easier to navigate back to the harbour while I can still see.â
âIâm fine,â Alice said nodding and tearing herself from Lisaâs embrace. âThank you for a lovely day.â
âYou want to have a go at steering?â Lisa asked guiding Alice towards the controls on the flybridge.
